April 1st, 2013 No comments

So the campaign launches tomorrow (and no, that’s no April’s Fool). I honestly have no idea what the reaction will be. Total indifference? Mild interest? Probably somewhere in the middle. The thing is I’m not really good at networking and I don’t know any video-game journalists. So I’ll mostly have to fill impersonal forms on their websites. Which may or may not be picked-up depending on their workload.

So tomorrow I’ll post the link to the gameplay video and to the campaign page itself. Then we’ll see how it goes. As promised, here’s a picture of the figurines available when the campaign launches tomorrow. They’re about 4 inches tall (~10cm).

A big shout-out to Thomas and Elise for their beautiful work! :)

This campaign will launch in 3, 2…

March 31st, 2013 No comments

Some of you guys may already know this, but I’m about to launch a crowdfunding campaign for “Ghost of a Tale”. In fact the launch date is only 3 days away: Tuesday April 2nd!

The campaign will be hosted on Indiegogo and will offer some great rewards (those are called “Perks” in Indiegogo language). Among which a figurine of the uncanny undead armored rats that plague the small island of Periclave.

So stay tuned, as tomorrow I’ll give you an exclusive look at the figurines!

Catastrophic Hard-Drive Failure?

March 20th, 2013 1 comment

Bit of a panic this morning, as I discovered that the entire hard drive partition on which resides the “Ghost of a Tale” Unity project has disappeared. It took me a moment to realize that everything was lost; the entire game project. Gone.

Overnight, Windows thought it would be a good idea to wipe out everything on a couple of hard drive partitions. For what reason? I do not know. Is that a sign that my computer is dying? Could be. Is it a sign that Microsoft’s software engineers made a tiny little boo-boo in the recent Windows 7 update? Possible.

After a couple of tense moments and infructuous reboots I managed to resurrect the game partition (although not the other partition, which seems very much gone) using Partition Wizard. And after some tests, it looks like the hard-disk itself is not to blame, which seems to incriminate software error.

In any case, it is NOT a pleasant experience. I am what you would call a backup-paranoid, which means I always have two recent backups stored in different locations at any time. But still, discovering that your hard work has simply vanished without warning is a bit chilling.

… Aaaand we’re back!

March 11th, 2013 No comments

As you can see, the site’s back online. Changes have been made to its scalability so that hopefully in the future it can deal with more traffic without choking on it.

Meanwhile I’ve worked on the water splash effect which looks nice when seen in motion (still-pictures really don’t do it justice). The cool thing of course is that it can be reused and tweaked for anything that hits the water, thanks to Unity’s prefabs system.

I got the tweet

March 5th, 2013 No comments

Just a quick shout-out to say I now have a Twitter account! I know, I’m so hip these days. I’ll probably send some tweets about the game progress.

So if for some reason my site gives up the ghost (see what I did there?) at least I’ll be able to still lament publicly about it! Ah progress…

Flight of stairs

March 2nd, 2013 1 comment

Hi guys. Just a quick update. I am hard at work on the game, as always, and the alpha trailer video is done! :) However I’m still sitting on it while I’m waiting for the last perk for the crowdfunding campaign to arrive (I’ll show you what it is when it’s done, of course). The reason I’m not uploading the video right now is simply because I’d like it to coincide with the Indiegogo campaign launch.

So here’s a little screenshot for now, where you can also see the new logo for the game…

Exporting tool

February 2nd, 2013 12 comments

I knew it’d be a chore, but it had to be done; I needed to write a tool that allows me to export models and animations from Maya to Unity into several frequently used folders very quickly. Similar to what I did with MayaCE3. So the process goes like this: I select any part of the model, choose a path in the menu and click export. And that’s it. A backup file is also created, in case I discover that my tiny innocuous changes have ruined everything!

I might make it public at some point if there’s enough of an interest for it. But truth be told I don’t even know if there’s a lot of Unity people coming to this site (after all, it used to be heavily geared at the CryEngine until not too long).

Also, I’ve been working very hard on a video of the beta that shows a little gameplay. I hope I can post it within a couple of weeks. The old video was grossly outdated anyway, since I switched to Unity 4. And I don’t count anymore how many times I’ve been asked to post a new video. So here’s a little screen-grab of the video for you, as a teaser… :)
