The Crysis editor is coooool! [Update: Download the map!]

November 2nd, 2007

I don’t know if you heard of a game called “Crysis” (which should be on the shelves in about 2 weeks), but a demo was recently released, and I just started playing with the editor. It’s basically a program which allows you to build “levels” for the game. However by “level” I mean landscapes the size of Switzerland.

Anyway you can do almost anything you want in there, from adding blades of grass to raise mountains. And the lighting engine included is also mighty impressive. It features Sub-Surface-Scattering, depth of field, motion blur, oceans, realistic night and day cycles, and… all in real time of course. Lotsa fun! :)

Update: I added the download link at the bottom of the page.

    That’s really cool… i wonder if you can port the scene into other apps for a cinematic approach

    I think that may be possible when the game is released. Not sure. But you know, they do the cinematics in game, and they have cameras, look-ats, scripting, node-based networks for creating all kinds of stuff that were until now reserved to CG movies. I mean, it’s really stunning.

    :) we use that kind of expression here in Italy, when someone is pretty good when doing something. “Sei un Dio!” ;). Do you plan to create a playable map, or you’re more oriented in visual effects (pictures)? Would love to see how I can see these landscapes on my config ofc… Why don’t you start releasing a small piece?

    Hey Seith, first thanks for all the good info and tutorials. (crysis) Second i have a problem importing models to maya 08 with Mayacgf 0.3.7, it works with .cgf or .chr, but it give me an error when importing .cdf files.

    #Error: fileselect_callback() takes at most 4 arguments (5 given)

    Could you help me with this? I love your work and thanks again.
